Foundation Courses
If you want to study at a British University you may have to complete a one year foundation course in order to gain entrance to a University, unless you already have good international school qualifications. To gain entrance to a foundation course in the UK you will need a school leaving certificate from your country. You also need to have a basic understanding of English which you can show by producing an ELTS or TOEFL certificate.
Your foundation course will:
- improve your English skills
- teach you how to study and learn at a British university, for example, how to take lecture notes or write English essays
- teach you your specialist subject, for example, if you want to study business or management at university you might do a course in economics and maths to prepare you for entry to your university course at the correct level. This will be at least half of your studying time
- teach you elements of information technology such as word processing and keyboard skills
- teach you about the culture of Britain and what you need to know about living and studying in this country.
Some universities run their own foundation courses. Other universities arrange foundation courses at associated colleges. In this case the foundation courses are run at the college before transferring the students to the university on successful completion of the course.
There are some colleges dedicated to women only and these welcome young Muslim women particularly.
